6 Ways to Increase a Student's Attention Span

Children struggle with paying attention. Their attention span is rather low. It gets worse when they are given a task that is difficult or intense, they just do not bother to even try.
To help students that have a challenge with paying attention in class, especially on difficult tasks, here are some strategies you can employ that might help increase that attention span and improve the overall outcome of tasks.

1. Take "Attention Breaks"

Attention breaks are an intentional practice of paying attention. You take time out to teach the student what it means to pay attention and how they can actually pay attention.
Set out a time during the school day for this exercise. Then take periodic intervals to practice attention breaks. With the help of a timer or an app on your smartphone, have the timer go off while the tasks is on and have the students indicate whether they were paying attention.
This exercise will help them really know what it means to pay attention and how they can pay attention to their tasks.

2. Engage Physical Activity

Children are very active beings. You can use this to your advantage to help kids that have a challenge with paying attention.
Give them breaks to engage in physical activity. The brief breaks for active play
Kids who struggle with attention often do better if they are given brief breaks for active play. Outdoor play times, bouncing on exercise balls, stretching, jumping and other physical activities can help attention-challenged kids stay focused.
You can also engage in the physical activity before they begin the task. Taking out 15mins before every serious task could go a long way to help them pay attention to it.

3. Remove Clutter

Clutter can be a huge distractor for kids. Remove excess visual experiences and unnecessary clutter from the classroom.
For a child struggling with focus, clutter will make it impossible for that child to pay attention. You want to keep them focused on each task.
Make the learning area clean and void of too many visuals.

4. Adjust Time Frames

Due to the short attention span of children, it may not be advisable to allocate long time-frames to tasks. Getting them to focus first may be a challenge, so if the duration is long be assured you have lost them.
Break your tasks into smaller interval allowing for breaks in-between. Children can concentrate on one task for two to five minutes per year old. For example, if you have a classroom of 6-year olds, expect 12 to 30 minutes of attention for your students.
Different ages of children need different time frames for tasks. If you need to break down tasks to allow the children focus, please do so. You can use timers to indicate when it is break time so the children dealing with attention does not feel completely overwhelmed.
You can ask the child to come to your desk during the breaks to show you his/her work. This produces the physical activity children need to stay engaged and it also provides you the opportunity to monitor the child’s progress.

5. Play Memory Games

Games help with concentration. Memory games help improve focus in a fun way so that they are able to still concentrate on a task even when it is challenging.
Have regular times in the normal school day where the class plays memory games, or work with the attention-challenged students outside of normal class time to play concentration games. Add memory games to classroom electronics to encourage this type of play during free time.
Memory games do not have to be complicated. Even a simple game of red-light-green-light, I-Spy or Simon Says forces a child to concentrate. Memory matching cards or the game Concentration can also be used to increase attention.

6. Rate (and Change) Tasks

Some tasks are not just for everybody, no matter how much you try. You can notice what task is not for a particular student by observing what the student constantly avoids or feels nervous about. You can also look out for what tasks the child seems overly distracted when involved in.
You can ask the child to rate the level of difficulty he/she finds in the task on a scale of 1 to 10. When the child gives the ratings, for the higher rated ones you can probe further to know what exactly about the task is challenging and how you can help to make it easier for the child to participate.
It is normal for some kids to struggle with attention more than others. It is your place as a teacher to find ways to help improve the concentration of your students in class. Give it some extra attention and you will see a significant change in your student’s concentration in class.
