FGGC Sagamu Celebrates 40th Anniversary, Opens Vocational Centre

It was a moment of appreciation and thanksgiving recently as staff, parents, former and present students of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Sagamu, Ogun State gathered at the school premises to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the school.

The thanksgiving ceremony, which was graced by traditional rulers, academic administrators, school principals from other girls’ government colleges across the country and friends of the school, was the culmination of week-long events and colourful activities, which started on January 15.

Some of the activities and major events witnessed during the course of the week programme include tree planting by some dignitaries of the school led by the Head Girl, Alice Solanke. Others were the cultural event, a music concert, inter-house sports competition, inter-school quiz, debate and drama presentation, the PTA/old girls’ day and special Jumat service, the grand finale anniversary lecture, as well as launching of the anniversary magazine.

On the special occasion of the school’s anniversary praise and worship day, the atmosphere was a mix of colourful appearances by past sets of the school and members of staff with a musical rendition by selected students and procession which elicited excitement and joyous moments with feelings of nostalgia.

Since its establishment in 1978, the college has produced enviable women in the society as academicians, doctors, lawyers, scientists, bankers, politicians, entrepreneurs and leaders in areas of their endeavours.

The Principal, Mrs. Agnes Owolabi enjoined the current students to emulate this upon graduation.

The highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation and unveiling of a fashion and beauty vocational centre erected by Mrs. Abosede Sule Odu of the 1990 alumni set. “The OrekeBeau Empowerment Centre is the first step to introduce the students to future job creation if they chose to tow the path of entrepreneurship.

“The centre will deliver a one year course to students with creative flair to have the opportunity of learning fashion and design in the school as it is tailored in the mainstream – design, pattern cutting, and sewing.”
