Most Common SEO Myths Debunked

You have probably been hearing a lot about SEO in recent times. It has become one of the most widely talked about and highly sought-after skill sets in the digital sphere.

A lot has been said about Search Engine Optimisation, and with all the chatter comes a lot of information being passed around – some accurate and some not accurate.

Every digital marketer needs an in-depth understanding of SEO, because creating a successful strategy for your digital marketing is a lot dependent on making sense of SEO.

The reality is that search traffic converts 9% better than social media traffic. But, in order to get it, you need to be clear on what is real and what is a myth in the industry.

1. It all begins and ends with ranking.
In case you are wondering, ranking does matter. After all, SEO is the act of maximizing your website’s potential to rank at the top search engine listings, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo. But ranking is not the end of a strong SEO strategy.

Having huge traffic is fun but if the users don’t convert to students then what is it worth? If your content doesn’t speak to your prospects and cause them to enrol then your top ranking is of no effect. Using high-ranking keywords and producing dead-end content will not get you to reach your business goals.

To maintain your competitive edge in the industry, you need to have smart target keywords and links that appeal to users and are relative to your brand.

2. Meta tags don’t matter
Meta tags are HTML tags that appear in between the opening and closing tags of a website. They’re used to show preview snippets for a specific webpage in the search results. They feature meta keyword phrases.

Three elements compose the meta tag: the title tag, the meta description, and meta keywords. There is a myth that meta tags do not matter because most major search engines no longer use them to determine rankings.

Meta tags still do matter and here is why: meta descriptions are the text snippets that appear just under your website title in the search engine results. They serve as the hook for your site and tell users what your site is all about. If you can deliver the content, meta tags can deliver the traffic.

Ingenious meta tags could have huge click potential for your site.

3. Stuffing keywords will help you
Including keywords to your website is good practice if it is unintentional. But when it is done excessively it comes across as spammy.

keyword stuffing is the repeated use of keywords to drive traffic to your site.

Creating a strong target keyword list for your site is one of the first and most crucial steps in crafting a strong digital marketing strategy. However, often times brands overdo it by repeating these keywords all over the site even where it does not make sense to.

Stuffing will make your site lose major points with Google. Keyword stuffing is actually what led to the release of the Google Panda algorithm in 2012. Since then, Google has been docking major points for sites that use this technique, smearing them with the “black hat” label along the way.

4. You can get on page 1 of Google search for just $99
Anybody that has any business online has probably received the email from overseas companies promising “1st Page Google Ranking for just $99.” This is the biggest myth in the industry. There is no quick way for getting on page 1 of Google search.

All these companies do is keyword stuffing. They build spammy backlinks to your site, resulting in a Google penalty.

Improving your SEO requires a strong strategy. An expert will need to identify what drives the most revenue for your school, then deploy an SEO strategy based on your actual business model.

5. Blogs will help your SEO.
It is widely believed that running a blog on your website will magically increase your search engine ranking.

If you have a strong website, running a blog on your website can help drive more traffic. But running a blog on its own is not enough to enhance your SEO presence.

Domain Authority (DA) is a search engine ranking score developed by Moz that predicts how well a website will rank on search engine result pages (SERPs). A Domain Authority score ranges from one to 100, with higher scores corresponding to a greater ability to rank.

Domain Authority is calculated by evaluating linking root domains, the number of total links, MozRank, MozTrust, etc. — into a single DA score. This score can then be used when comparing websites or tracking the "ranking strength" of a website over time.

If you have a website that has a high domain authority, internal blog posts will work in your favour. If you are in a line of work where there is not a lot of competition, you can rank well in blog posts as well.

For new websites or you have a low domain authority, just posting a blog to your site is going to have hardly any benefit from an SEO perspective. People like to think that when you post an internal blog, Google will see your website receiving “fresh content.” While this is not inaccurate, on a scale of 1-100, this scores a 1 in terms of how much it will move the needle for your SEO.

6. Any IT person can handle SEO
SEO is more technical than people think. SEO needs to be handled by a professional. People usually feel anybody who is good with computers and has a lot of technical expertise are the best people to handle their SEO.

The reality is that there is more to SEO than having technical knowledge. SEO is part art and part science and technical knowledge alone aren’t enough to have a superior SEO strategy.

Basically, before you believe anything you hear about SEO, test it for yourself many times and on many sites. Many factors could influence the success of an SEO strategy. So, even when it appears to work, keep in mind that it may not always work.
